
The State Library, Kohima, established in the year 1981, is a branch of the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Nagaland, located at PR Hill Kohima. It aims to provide information and knowledge through its resources while also preserving it and promoting and encouraging reading habits, especially among young people. Library offer free book reading facilities to all to grow healthy readership. With the strength of over 61,500 books, it caters to all sections of the general public and is open to all residents of the State for membership. The total membership of the State Library presently stands at 4324.
The Library functions under different sections namely – the main Stack Room, Circulation Counter, Reference Section, Children’s Section, Northeast Section, Hindi Section, Newspaper Section, Computer Section, Reprography Section, Processing Unit, Preservation and Conservation, Conference Room, etc. it has a reading room with a seating capacity of 40 persons.
The main Stack Room holds the main collection of the Library with books dealing with almost all disciplines. Books are circulated daily at the circulation counter. Members of the Library are allowed to borrow two books at a time for a period of 15 days.
Books in the Reference Section are kept for consultation inside the library only and are not to be issued or taken outside the library. The section is well stacked with encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference books. The Library also has a good number of Hindi books as well as general books which are received from Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF), Kolkata.
Besides its own collection, the State Library houses books and materials belonging to the Kohima Educational Trust (KET). Library received books as a gift from Individual, Institutions and Government Departmental Publications etc. wherein books and materials of varied interests are made accessible to the public.
The Library has a separate section for children’s storybooks, encyclopedias and dictionaries, illustrated books on different subjects are kept to attract children to the Library. It has a separate reading room especially for children attached to it. In addition to books, there are various kinds of toys for children to play with. This section also has audio visual facilities wherein movies, documentaries etc. can be shown.
In the Computer section, Internet facilities are provided to the users at a nominal charge. Computer typing and printing services are also provided.
There is a Conference room which can be utilized for hosting conferences and seminars for about 20-30 persons. A nominal fee is charged for utilization of the Conference room.
