Development of Archives

The State Archives has been collecting and maintaining non-current records and rendering its services to scholars, administrators, historians and individuals. Most of the records were collected and brought from the districts as well as from neighbouring states by officials of the State Archives branch. In order to upgrade the standard of maintenance and faster restoration of records, the Department has procured and installed the Book Drive-Pro.

 

In March, 2012, a programme titled ‘Return of Naga Heritage from USA’ was held in the State Archives where the Department officially received the private collection of Dr. Gordon P. Means through Achilla Imlong Erdican. The collection from 1832 – 2010 has 538 articles/ items/books/video/movie tapes/audio cassettes/magazines, of Naga History, art, polity, etc. The Archives week is organized annually during the Hornbill Festival. The main purpose of the exhibition is to create awareness of archival treasures and draw attention to the importance of Archives as state’s documentary heritage.

 

The main objective of Nagaland State Archives is collection and preservation of the State’s Historical Records. Since its humble beginning with the view to preserve the records, the staffs of Archives Branch has collected more than 20,000 records consisting of Official Documents, Rare Books, Microfilms, Maps, Photographs, Private Papers, Newspaper Clippings etc. The records are collected from within and outside the State from different creating agencies. As the custodian of the historical heritage of the state, the State Archives assist and renders our services to Research Scholars, Historians, Administrators, Students, Individuals and creating agencies who intent to see historical documents of the Naga people.
